Stuart Hall’s life and work proved inspirational throughout the Caribbean and wider diaspora, so his death has left so many of us with a deep sense of loss and sadness. He played a formative role in the Black Diaspora Visual Arts events organized in collaboration with AICA SC in Barbados and Martinique as well as the UK over the past five years. The first 2009 conference commenced with a feature address by Stuart Hall. Unable to travel to Barbados for the event, his address took the form of a filmed conversation with David A. Bailey. It was a mesmerizing discussion that fueled the next two days of debate. Hall’s conversation and indeed the conference itself were expansions on his essay « Black Diaspora Artists in Britain: Three Moments in Post-War History. »
At the 2011 BDVA event, Black Jacobins, held jointly in Barbados and Martinique, director Mike Dibb screened his classic Channel 4 programme, « CLR James talking to Stuart Hall. »
